UPSC Combined Preparation Strategy for Preliminary and Main Examination

If you study separately for prelims and mains, you will spend more time than what is needed. Also the broad syllabus, topics and, content are the same. However, the way of preparation is different. Prelims require an in-depth understanding of each topic. Mains require an overview of all topics. You can’t get an overview of all topics without an in-depth analysis of each topic. So It is always beneficial for you if you prepare at a time for both Preliminary and Mains. Separate preparation is required only for an optional subject.

Specific Strategy for Preliminary Examination

Deep analysis of the topic gives you a better score than other aspirants. You can eliminate multiple options or choose the correct answer based on your analysis of the topic. You should read topics that are common for both Prelims and Mains at this stage.

Specific Strategy for Mains Examination

Answer writing is the primary focus at this stage. You should practice answer writing daily to increase speed. If the speed is not increased, then choose your words wisely and precisely. You can convey your answer in minimum words if you choose specific keywords. Even space is restricted for each question. So you should choose your answer words wisely.
